Technical Writing

When I was in junior high school, I worked on the school paper, writing articles and formatting the paper. This was before computers were widely used. We typed articles on mechanical typewriters, cut out our columns, and moved them around the page like puzzle pieces to decide on our layout before gluing them down. We created headlines with transfer letters.

I also worked on our high school literary magazine.

I've written a lot of fiction and have had much practice self-editing. However, I have learned a lot about the editing process from taking Editing at Metropolitan State University. For the course, I wore the hat of managing editor and led our group through the process of choosing a loose theme, writing articles in that theme, creating a style sheet and producing a fully edited summer newsletter.

At work, I recently designed and authored half of our annual enrollment bootcamp resource for contact center agents assisting customers with life insurance enrollment. I have also helped to enhance our existing knowledge base by providing actionable feedback to make the material clearer and to add material where missing.

I became the managing editor for our Editing group project. We created a summer newsletter with five articles. You can download and read the full newsletter by clicking on the image. To demonstrate my editing abilities, I have focused on one article that I was first assigned to edit. You can click on the thumbnails below to download files containing the original article and other files representing the main stages that led to its final copyedited form.
